GeekBrekky is an informal weekly gathering for people in and around Sheffield’s digital and tech community. It’s a chance to meet people, catch up with friends and start Friday with a conversation.
There’s no agenda, speakers or round of sales pitches. Talk might turn to technology, work or an idea someone is exploring — or to films, music and whatever else is on people’s minds.
Come regularly or occasionally. Join in or just listen. Breakfast is optional, and you don’t have to call yourself a geek.
GeekBrekky is currently nomadic as we search for our next permanent venue – please check the Sheffield Digital calendar to see where we’ll be each week!!
Who’s it for?
Everyone is welcome, whether you’re established in the industry, studying, looking for work, changing careers or simply curious about Sheffield’s digital scene. You also don’t need to be a Sheffield Digital member.
If you work remotely or on your own, it’s a good reason to get out and spend some time with other people. If you’re new to Sheffield, it’s an easy way to start getting to know the community.
Coming for the first time? Say hello and tell us you’re here for GeekBrekky. There’s nothing to prepare and no expectation to introduce yourself to the whole group.
Etiquette
GeekBrekky is informal and there’s no set agenda, but there are just a few rules of behaviour. First of all, like all our events, we operate under our Code of Conduct, so please give that a quick read (it’s short but important).
The only other rules, are to make sure you listen and don’t talk over other people – give space for everyone to express themselves and explain their points; and to de-escalate a conversation if it becomes even slightly heated. We want conversations about meaningful things, even if they are potentially contentious, but not if it’s likely to be offensive to others around the table.
Slack
Regular (and irregular) “Geek Breakfasteers” often chat to each other online during the week in the dedicated community channel #geekbrekky on the Sheffield Digital Slack workspace.
You are very welcome to join by filling out this invitation request form.
A little history
GeekBrekky predates Sheffield Digital. Its beginnings were informal, but by the mid-2000s it was becoming a familiar gathering in Sheffield’s tech scene.
In 2015, Sheffield Digital co-founder Chris Dymond committed to making sure it happened every week, giving people a dependable time and place to meet. It continued online during the COVID-19 lockdowns before returning to café tables in 2021.
Venues have changed a few times, but the idea remains simple: make an inclusive space for people and conversation, at the same time and place every week.
