New HealthTech challenge launched

The new Connected Healthcare programme launched last week gives digital companies the opportunity to collaborate with the NHS to address some specific challenges.

Connected Healthcare is an initiative of Enterprising Barnsley in partnership with the Yorkshire & Humber Academic Health Science Network and Tech North. The programme is made up of four events designed to support digital health innovation through stimulating dialogue and collaboration between the creative, digital and healthcare sectors.

In the Design Challenge, healthcare professionals, creative and digital businesses and tech entrepreneurs have the opportunity to work together to co-design new digital health solutions in response to unmet clinical and patient needs. Healthcare professionals will learn what digital approaches can bring to service improvement and patient care, and creative and digital teams will find out about the healthcare market and new opportunities for their products and services.

The Design Challenge consists of two hackathon-style discovery days where digital professionals can work with healthcare providers and patient groups on specific challenge areas. They are:

  • Advanced care planning for people with long-term conditions
  • Dementia care
  • Falls and patient safety
  • Improving services for people with learning disabilities
  • Maternity care
  • Supporting people with Multiple Sclerosis
  • Patient flow in the Emergency Department
  • Prevention and management of pressure ulcers

These challenges have been identified by Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

The next events are:

Thursday 3 March – healthcare professionals, creative and digital and tech entrepreneurs to meet and work through user design methodologies to understand the challenge area and map the patient journey.

Wednesday 20 April – development of prototypes and consideration of business models. Presentation of ideas and future plans.

Both days will be actively facilitated by people with experience of HealthTech design and NHS/digital agency co-working and there will be advice from people with expertise in the commercialisation of digital health technologies.
